Go Green - Planned Chapter Events

October, 13: The Forest Greens will be going to Johnson's Orchards this Saturday, October 15 to glean apples for the Daily Bread food bank.  Driving information is available here.  Members will be there between 10am-2pm.

Why we're going: First of all, apple gleaning means picking up fallen apples at an orchard that the owners will not be using.  The apples are free to the gleaners (that's us).  This makes use of an otherwise unused resource.  Second, we're feeding hungry people people, and that's always a good thing.  Third, we're making use of LOCAL food, and one of the biggest environmental issues is food that has to travel a long distance from farm (or orchard) to table.  So, less gas will be used to get the apples from Johnson's Orchards to the food bank than would be used to get the apples from another state.

August: All summer our group is going to be collecting aluminum cans for the Habitat House - the "Can House".  For more information, go to Lynchburg Habitat's website at http://lynchburghabitat.org/can-built-house.htm.  This is a great project, because it gets more people recycling, helps build a house for someone in Lynchburg and will make it possible for the money saved to be used to build Habitat houses in Sri Lanka.

How You "Can" Help

What members can do:

  • Print this page on some recycled paper or on the back side of some paper that was going to be thrown away:  Habitat Brochure
  • Walk around your neighborhood and deliver the brochure to any home where they will agree to save their aluminum cans
  • Put your phone number on the brochure and tell them you will come to pick up their cans as soon as they have a full bag.
  • Bring them with you the first day of school in the Fall so we can go together to deliver them all to Habitat.
